Ethnic sketches for Scandinavia Countries by Gloria Poole of Missouri and Georgia

I think I have made i very clear in many places that I, Gloria Poole, adding these sketches I drew, painted, signed, photographed , uploaded today to this blog of mine, is the same Gloria who painted the ethnic series of oil paintings and sketches that I began in year 2006 and continue. I often draw sketches of a particular ethnicity before painting on canvas. These sketches are about Scandinavian countries of Norway and Sweden. For some reason, I have had much trouble trying to do justice to their very fair skin and flaxen hair and sort of delicate features. Part of the problem is that I have never met in person a person from either Norway or Sweden so I have no personal memories of how they looked or behaved. But that is not the main problem because I have never met many of the ethnic groups I have since painted. I think the main problem with painting an image of a Norwegian or a Swede is that I thought of their countries as so far north and frozen with ice, and dark for long periods of time, and reindeer and ice on the terrain sort of affects my positive state of mind when drawing. But then I saw a TV program about Norway that showed it as a fishing village with boats, [which I knew existed there] but seeing them and seeing the fishermen [something I have seen on coast of Georgia many times before] helped. So, I decided to try to draw something to help me think of Norway and Sweden in a frame of mind that would improve my sketches. So, the first sketch is one I drew today and painted signed photographed and uploaded of a Norwegian Christian Church that exists in the U S but I altered its image some. I didn't quite get the steeple right and I realized that the first ten times I photographed it, I had to redo some of it immediately. It was very lop-sided and so I repainted it rephotographed it. The sketches following it are my attempts to sketch Norwegian and Swedish [Scandinavian ethnicity] people in years past, not today. The first two are awful. I just had no idea how to draw them. The third is better. So, this is a way of showing how much I improve with drawing sketches. I have yet to paint an oil painting of either a Norwegian or a Swede. So, in time. This sketch is only good for revealing to myself how much I have improved. Which of course, is the purpose of drawing sketches in the first place, i.e. to improve skills .

I was beginning to sort of get idea in my mind how I think they look. Whether they actually look that way or not, I am not sure. So, that was my hestitation about painting it in oils and labeling it either Norwegian, Swedish or Scandinavian.

This sketch was from a sales person I saw that I thought 'aha, she must be Norwegian", but I didn't ask. Just decided to draw and alter image some so not recognizable as a particular person.

This sketch was from the news where I saw a Swedish politician in the EU, and I tried to draw from that news photo on screen. So, it is better.

This sketch of a mother and child is more Swedish looking I think.
